INDUSTRIAL DESIGN STUDENTS FROM PRATT INSTITUTE WERE TASKED BY CAESARSTONE WITH THE CHALLENGE OF ENVISIONING A KITCHEN SET IN THE YEAR 2050.

By then the world will be a completely different; self-driving cars, virtual reality, and sophisticated autonomous robots should all be commonplace.

Due to the densification of cities, 80% of the world's population will reside in urban centers and the population in New York City will be close to 25 million.

Through advances in smart technology the kitchen of the future will inherently change the way we interact with food; however, we wanted our kitchen to enable the user to juxtapose technological advances while still maintaining a human connection with their food.

Humans began cooking over an open flame; and our 2050 kitchen vision, harks back to that.

For centuries, the hearth was an integral part of a home; and informed by historical references our kitchen acts as a physical metaphor for the "hearth", the central unifying element of all social and family life.

Utilizing the Caesarstone surfacing material in a circular rather than rectilinear layout we’ve created a poetic simplicity, which enables food to flow from the cooking and prep areas seamlessly to the cantilevered dining section at the opposite side.

Designed by the students of the Industrial Design department at Pratt Institute under the creative direction of Visiting Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at Pratt and New York based architect and designer, Marc Thorpe. The future kitchen was displayed from May 19-23 2017 at WantedDesign Manhattan- Terminal Stores, 269 11th Avenue, New York, NY 10011.
